O Level vs Matric Chemistry: Key Differences for Students

Quick answer

Different exam styles need different preparation. Here is how they compare.

Both cover the same core chemistry, such as atomic structure, bonding, acids and bases, and basic organic chemistry. The difference lies in how you are tested.

Matric (board exams)

  • Questions follow the textbook closely.
  • MCQs, short questions and long questions reward accurate definitions and textbook answers.

O Level (Cambridge)

  • Questions test application and understanding in new situations.
  • Mark schemes reward precise key words, so practising past papers is essential.

Our advice

Build concepts first, then practise in the style of your own exam. In our Chemistry tuition we teach the same topic differently for Matric and O Level students so each is ready for their paper.
