What Is Tajweed and Why Does It Matter?

Quick answer

Tajweed is the set of rules for pronouncing every letter of the Quran correctly. Here is what it covers and how to start.

The word Tajweed comes from an Arabic root meaning to make something better. In Quran recitation it means giving each letter its right: its correct point of articulation (makhraj) and its qualities (sifaat).

What a Tajweed course covers

  • Makharij: where each letter is pronounced from: throat, tongue, lips or nasal passage.
  • Noon Sakinah and Tanween: Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab and Ikhfa.
  • Meem Sakinah: Ikhfa Shafawi, Idgham Shafawi and Izhar Shafawi.
  • Madd: how long to stretch certain vowels.
  • Qalqalah and Waqf: the echoing letters and where to stop.

Why it matters

Some pronunciation mistakes can change the meaning of a word. Learning Tajweed protects the meaning and lets you recite with the beauty the Quran deserves.
